can't help wondering what this would have been like if kafka had lived long enough to finish + edit it himself. still fascinating, wonderfully written. funny, sharp, makes me think a lot about what a story can be/do.

Such an interesting concept, and yet I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed by the execution. The writing was a little dull, and overall it felt like unfulfilled potential.
“I take this only to keep you from feeling that you have left something undone.”
a story which to assign meaning and interpretation to would seem to destroy the power and flexibility of its parable. being incomplete, it is impossible for any one person to get a complete picture of what kafka intended.
despite that, i can feel myself drawn back to and dwelling on the absurd images, the misery of bureaucracy, and the self-justification of the Law. josef k. is a highly arrogant character who fails and misunderstands all of his attempts to “game” the system, and so he dies guilty, like a dog, without who and what he has been charged with. but at the same time he is a (flawed) victim of a cruel system which refuses to allow anyone to escape or understand it without first becoming complicit in it.
this book, in a word:
“something to think about..”
