This was the first book that I have ready by author Linda Wisdom.

Demons are a Girls' Best Friend was a cute and fun read with a good mix of action and romance. Maggie, a 700 year old witch who works for the Hellion Guard policing all kinds of nasties including demons now finds herself working with and attracted to a Fire Demon named Declan. Maggie has to work through her resistance to her attraction to Declan while working with him to save the world from demons who are conspiring to summon an evil god who will inflilct havoc on the mortal world. Easier said than done when Declan's own family seems to be involved in this evil plan.

While I enjoyed this story, I admit that at times I wished there was more development and focus on he main characters, rather than the building of so many other characters and circumstances. I didn't find myself as investede in Maggie and Declan as I would have liked to have been and I attribute that to not having spent much time really getting to know them in a way that allowed me to bond with the characters. I was more connected to Declan than I was to Maggie because the glimpses I got into his life helped you to empathize with him. I just wish we were given more of an insight into who Maggie was than the sarcastic, dare-devil witch out to save the world.

In the end I enjoyed this book enough that I will read the next book in the series.

Book 4 in a series, I think- it might be Book 5? This one reads pretty well as a standalone. A weird storyline about Mayan Demons.

this was a pretty good. To tell you the truth, I really didn't like Maggie at the begin because she was being racist to Declan because of what he was. but she warmed up to me in the end. Elle was hilarous with her wanting of having men in her web and fighting.

First in the Demons Fifth in the Jazz Tremaine (a.k.a., Hex) paranormal romance revolving around a group of witches, demons, and other paranormals who kick ass. The couple focus here is on Maggie O'Malley and Declan.

It's also been published under the title, Best Hex Ever as a spin-off from her Jazz Tremaine / Hex series. (Turns out her publisher simply wanted a new look and not a new series.)

My Take
This story does not fit within the humor of the previous Jazz Tremaine stories. In fact, I kept checking the cover, Goodreads.com, and Wisdom's own site to check! It's still an interesting story. Just not what I was expecting.
It's a twist to read of a demon with a heart. I'm reading one sentence that explains how Declan can level a city and how he lights a cigar with a finger, and the next he's sighing about wanting something more from his life. Who knew? A domestic demon. Then there's that spell Maggie puts on Courtney...Crack. Me. Up.

YES! I love how Maggie twisted it around for that jerk of a school principal trying to laying off the blame on Courtney! Talk about a double standard! Arghh!! I hate bullies and I hate the people who support 'em.
Declan's parting thought about his demon family: They only stand behind you if it protects them from being in the line of fire."
No, it's not a typical Jazz Tremaine-style story, but it is a fun, action-packed read and this new series starts with Maggie (from Jazz Tremaine) and Declan. Wisdom has a great cast of characters on both sides of this divide.

The Story
A routine arrest of a Bloater at Damnation Alley brings Maggie and Declan together. She's resisting; he's not. But it's Mal's insistence and Anna's distress over the coming of The Destroyer that forces Maggie to work with the stunningly gorgeous Declan. And he's not above using whatever he can conjure to woo her. Or to protect his sister.

Then they find out about Courtney — the intended sacrifice to allow a god of death and destruction into our world.

Well, that "sacrifice" is in the foster care system and it looks like Maggie just might be a long lost cousin.

The Characters
Margit "Maggie" O'Malley is a Special Ops witch; Elegance, a.k.a., Elle, is her lively black widow spider tattoo with her own powers. And her own search for a lover who can survive her. Team members include Frebus, a fur-covered blond with more hair than a Saint Bernard with teeth like steel knives; Meech is married to the pregnant Reesa; and, Tita is a vampire.

As members of the Hellion Guard, they can go anywhere and do anything. Sybil is an elf who excels at interrogation; Boris is her boss. Mal is her short, cigar-smokin' boss who's dating Brigid, a gnome. Kittan is one of their best researchers. Xera is a great healer, but has a terrible bedside manner with the mentally distraught. Shayla is another healer. Ravenna is a Seer. Zouk and his team go missing when they go after the demon rave; they're among the best in the Guard. Ferrets are the Guard's messengers and include Trickie who's rootin' for the New Orleans Cubs; Bickie who can't stop talkin'; and, Zickie is white with a red beret.

Courtney Parker is a 15-year-old with some major personal issues. Of course, it doesn't help that some demons want to sacrifice her to end what we know as the world. Aleta was Maggie's baby sister and her death inspired Maggie's career path. Mick Frasier is Courtney's human-seeming boyfriend with a purpose. Troy Reynolds is one of Courtney's classmates, and he seems to have picked up his social skills from his father.

Declan is half-fire demon and half-human with his human half predominating. He's taken over the Damnation Alley from Ratchet, who disappeared. Snips is an imp and Declan's personal assistant at the club. A club that also serves as a portal from Hell.Part of Declan's job is to police anyone who travels through the portal. He's got his own daddy-issues by the name of Victorio. Anna is Declan's half-sister and a Seer; he's trying to protect her from their father. Wreaker is Declan's cousin and an incubus; he's totally out for number one. He's totally ticked that Declan got the club and he didn't. Alexi is one of the portal guards; Anton is a bouncer.

Algar is an elf Sybil was hot after. Until Declan stepped in.

The Hellion Guard are "protectors for all creatures in this world and others". Eurydice is the Head Witch of the Witches Academy.

The Cover and Title
The cover is cute with a disguised Maggie wearing a tremendously huge gun stuck in the back waistband of her teeny, black miniskirt, leather-trimmed bandeau top, and black tights. I liked the sparkles flowing off her snapping fingers! Maggie's back is to us so as to provide a better view of Declan's well-muscled chest as he leans back against the bar.

The title is a nod to Declan, one of those Demons [who] are a Girl's Best Friend.

This is my first book I have read by this author. I was excited to start this one since everyone raves about her writing and characters that she can come up with.

As I started reading the book, I was sucked into the realm of demons, witches, fairies and other supernatural creatures. I was excited to read about a heroine that not only kicks butt, but has a personality of humor and sensitivity as well. I liked the character of Maggie. She could kick butt with the other creatures and embraced her witch abilities to full force. She could douse you with water with the flick of her wrist and turn you into your worst animal nightmare with a thought. Declan, a demon with a secret, was also kick butt and had a temper to match his powers. He was a fire demon that could light up a room faster than a gas drenched building made of old wood. You could sense his moods with the simple feeling of the room temperature.

While I found the two to have some great chemistry and the plot was fun, the book was not as great as I expected. The romance so too quick and far apart with not much romance to keep it exciting. The characters were quirky, but at times there were too many to care about. I wanted the book to focus more on the main characters instead of the surroundings and other people in the book. At times it felt that the plot was stalling as well. It seemed to get moving and the action would pick up, yet once it reached a certain point, it flat lined and was left in a climatic limbo. Then the author would have to pull us back in and get us moving with more action before starting the process all over again.

While I enjoyed the humor, witty dialogue and supernatural elements of the book, the story as a whole was just mediocre. I understand that this is the first in a series, and certain characters and plots had to be set up for future books, but I like my main characters to interact more than what was presented in this book. Not a bad read, but not one of the great reads either.

Meet Maggie O'Malley. Maggie works for the Hellion Guard. A secretive law enforcement branch that deals in the unusual. Maggie's latest assignment is to provide protection to Declan and his club the Damnation Alley. The Alley has a demon portal. It seems that the Mayans have interest in the portal and that is not all they are interested in. They have targeted a human girl for their sacrifice. Can a demon and a witch really work together?

I am a fan of Linda Wisdom. I love her other witch series. This time she brings..."sexy back" in witches with Demon's are a Girl's Best Friend! This book reads more like urban fantasy than paranormal. It is darker and edgier. Maggie can kick some serious butt and look good doing it at the same time. Declan and Maggie was smoking together. Declan was such a big, burly man that he needed a woman or witch like Maggie. Maggie and Declan fed off each other. Who knew that a demon and a witch would make a perfect match? Ms. Wisdom did of course. I can not wait to read Undercover Demon, book two.

My thoughts:

Where to start, we have a witch and a demon, some crazy Mayans, and doom on the horizon. Ok back to the beginning. The book is about Maggie who is a witch and works for the Hellion Guards. They keep the supernaturals in check and sees to that no humans know that elves, gnomes, trolls, warlocks, or anything like that exists. She is kick-ass, 700 years old, and can take care of herself. She has attitude and I liked her. Not to mention that she has one awesome side-kick, a tattoo named Ella that can talk and walk around (talking about a spider here.) Ella brought humour to the book.

Then there is Declan whom she meets while investigating a case at his club. He is a firedemon, hot (yes literally), but he is also nice, and I fell at once. Gotta love a demon that is in touch with his human side. These two want each other at once, but since demons and other beings do not mix it's slow, and it builds up.

It's a nice world, where you can find a bunch of different supernaturals, and humans do not know about them. And in this one something dark is coming, Mayans wants blood sacrifices to bring forth some evil God called the Destroyer. Oh I like a good evil god now and again.

The side characters are fun, mostly Ella, cos she rocks, but the elf Sybil is nice and has a sense of humour, and then there is the teenager Maggie has to protect, and she was one cool kid.

Here and there people are mentioned, I did not mind but I did realize that they are from this other series she has written. For me it worked even though I didn't know them.

Conclusion:

I ended up liking this book, I think it was all cos of Declan, he was just so hot and sweet. And like the title says, demons are a girl's best friend. The book has passion, ass-kicking, humour, and a good plot.

Rating:

I enjoyed it

Loved this book and am dreading that there is only one more to go before I have to wait for her to write/release more. I cannot wait to meet all 13 witches.

Not for me.
