I hated every character in this book. They were all too stupid to live. Seriously - they all went on a mysterious hike in the jungle with like one granola bar, a piddly bottle of water and sandals. And then proceeded to make the shittiest decisions at every turn. I cannot.

Also, wtf is this sentence “it wasn’t diarrhea, but something one notch short of it. The shit slipped wetly out of him, collapsing into a small pile between his feet.” WHYYY. WHY IS THIS A SENTENCE THAT EXISTS.

That said, four stars. The story was good. Lots of body horror - super creepy and upsetting.

The jacket of this book described it as "unputdownable". I would agree. I mean, I did put it down, but with some reluctance. The characters weren't my favorite people, but I didn't hate them. They were right out of college, so younger than me and probably more for the party life that I, myself, have ever been. But I still wanted to see where they were headed, what mistakes they would make, and what fate they would find.

The book has no chapters, so there really is no 'good stopping point' in the book, which to me is either Cheating for "unputdownable" or utilizing a clever device for the same. The author has a way of getting inside the head of his characters. It's hard to describe, but there were times where I felt his female characters' voices were spot-on with realistic emotions and actions, which was impressive for a male author.

I wanted to like this book but it just felt really long for really not that long of a plot. I think the whole thing might be the span of 3 or 4 days?
I think maybe focusing on one or two of the characters at a time would have helped keep some of the focus but overall it didn't feel like a lot of payoff for just the last 20% of the book.
