I didn't realize this was a dystopian book when I picked it up, I thought it was just a weird mushroom book like What Moves the Dead. I never like dystopian narratives. Not the book's fault, my bad!

I don’t know what I think about this book. It’s a nice story and maybe I’m missing the message of the book.

It’s beautifully written, you can really picture the characters in your mind. The story is almost poetic.

Unsettling, dark, and one of the weirdest books I have read. The imagery made me feel gross and uncomfortable but overall, I kind of loved this book?

This follows a small, dystopian society after all the women were wiped out due to a mysterious virus that made them all turn into mushrooms. Eventually, they are replaced by something wholly unnatural, seductive, and terrifying.

The narrator, Nate, was basically the village storyteller and I loved the conversation around communication and the central themes of constant change. This challenged gender norms and roles with depth and nuance. The plot was very ambiguous and left a lot to the imagination, which I honestly feel was a good move here. Had all the questions been answered I think it would have lost some of its intrigue. Disturbing, strange, and ethereally beautiful, I ended up really enjoying this quick read. However, I would only recommend this to a very specific type of person as it does have lots of body horror that is truly frightful.
