This book is so simplistic and yet conplicated with the sense and feelings it evokes. What an interesting take on gender, power and mushrooms.

My only complaint is that it ended. I want more. So much more.

What a bizarre read. It's like a car crash...you want to turn away but can't.
The writing is quite beautiful, the story line unique, and it's actually a profound study of gender, gender roles, and, well, humanity.
I would classify this as a dystopian horror. While I didn't dislike it, I didn't love it either. It ends rather abruptly, and while I'm not sure I wanted more of the story, it's that whole car crash thing where I wanted it to be over but I didn't.

Review to come later. This edition has two short stories - The Beauty and Peace, Pipe. Both are particularly good examples of weird lit and will not be for everyone. Of the two, Peace, Pipe is the better story and I think the average reader will be more inclined to connect with it than The Beauty.

There are no more women left. They all died from some weird fungal disease and now the remaining men of this particular settlement sit around campfires at night listening to Nate, our protagonist, spin tales of how wonderful the women were. It’s always great to be appreciated too late, right? Something peculiar begins happening on the graves where the remaining women were buried, and then it takes off from there in what is ultimately a brilliantly orchestrated deconstruction of gender roles. I don’t mean to spoil anything for anyone, but I have to share that this book grossed me out like nothing ever has. I love my mama friends and their wee ones, but I am not the maternal sort and I can’t even deal with the body horrors of pregnancy–which this book has taken to a whole new and disturbing level.

A fascinating and horrifying novella that defies easy categorization (body-horror? post-apocalyptic? weird-lit?). Technically, it's post-apocalyptic, but it focuses more on gender / interspecies relations. Anyway, if you're looking for a fungal weirdness, here's your fix.

I need time to write a more coherent review.
