While Preacher Vol 8: All Hell's A-Coming again has little to nothing to so with the plot presented back in Vol 2 (Jesse's attempt to find God and make him answer for his desertion), it's still a pretty good collection of stories.

We finally get some backstory on Tulip which is pretty great and LONG overdue. Jesse picks up several hitchhikers on his drive from Salvation TX to NYC, including ol' Bob & Freddy, the sexual investigators from the Jesus de Sade story (back in Vol 2?) which was a fun surprise, but really this whole truck ride seemed pointless (and what was up with the latest hitcher?! Shadowy figure I thought was going to turn out to be someone famous or a character we've seen before--instead it seemed neither).

Amy meets a bartender with a strange history; Jesse & Tulip try to catch up and have fun together; Jesse befriends a homeless lady who dishes up a lot of dirt on what Cass did to her friends back in the '40s; Arseface finds out what his manager is really after; Herr Start gets a visit from a (really) old friend; Hoover finally finishes his day at the beach; NASA sees a strange message from a pissed ex-employee; and we end with a whole backstory of 20-y-o Jesse, Tulip, and Amy when they stole cars & saved horses.

It's a very strange mix-up but was a fun read... I'm looking forward to getting into the final volume to FINALLY get some closure about how Jesse is going to deal with God (and what the hell is wrong with Cassidy's eyes)

The funniest Starr has been and (though never intentionally) and Jesse Custer is one of the greatest Americans of all time.

The penultimate volume of preacher is a great character piece. In the "all hell's a coming" storyline the graphic violence is not as shocking any more. It's more the psychological thends of trauma, addiction and compulsion that take the center stage. Off to the final part.

The horse stealing one-shot is so terrible it brings down the entire series.

I think, considering that this was the penultimate episode of a story that has so many characters and plot threads, this volume was as good as could be expected.

There is a lot of variety in this issue -- Tulip's back-story, Jesse's cross country drive, Jesse and Tulip's reunion, a bit of color on Amy, more skeletons in Cassidy's closet, further degradation of Herr Starr, and a car-thievin', horse-rustlin', adventure from Jesse, Tulip and Amy's past. The end of that particular story is one of my favorite moments of the comic, where Jesse, riding his horse off into the sunset, ponders asking Tulip and Amy to have a threesome with him.

Some strong character backstories as it moves towards finalising the plot.

Can't put my finger on why I liked this one so much. Maybe with everyone back together (somewhat), it was nostalgia. There were some great crazy stories, some hilarious dialogue, Jessie kicking everyone's ass, Cassidy being a wanker and Arseface suffering - just like the good ole days.
