I read this book in high school and I really enjoyed it. It was a beautifully written novel that shined a different light on the African culture. The book discussed very deep topics, and had a various of themes that I still remember today. It was just a different book that you should read it at least once in your life!

This novel follows Okonkwo, member of the Ibo clan of Umuofia. It explores the culture and traditions of the clan, and then introduces the influence of European colonisation based on religion and ideology. It represents the Scramble for Africa which happened between 1833 and 1914, and I think it’s interesting how this is realistic and these things happened not that long ago. As a student, I also found it intriguing how the people of Umuofia responded to men from another country coming to their land and forcing their religion and customs onto them. But as a reader, I particularly enjoyed the relationship between Ekwefi and Ezinma. I recommend this book, particularly if you have an interest in history, politics, sociology, or more specifically colonialism. I read this book for University and it’s sparked an interest in the comparison between European colonisation and other colonisation. ‘She swore within her that if she heard Ezinma cry she would rush into the cave to defend her against all the gods in the world. She would die with her.’
