Devastating. I only know pain. 

I ripped through Part I pretty casually, but by the time I finished it I literally had to put a pin in it and go back and read it all back again with tabs. The strongest feeling that I would only get to read this book for the first time once. And I was right. 

Pleease check out trigger warnings, I think I have a fairly strong stomach but parts of this book were sickening and exhausting to read.

This book was brutal. At its core, it's a story about war and colonization and includes many gruesome details of the atrocities that come with them. Please keep in mind that the warfare in this books is heavily influenced by the Japanese colonization of China during World War II/pre WWII-- I was caught off guard by the parallels. I found Rin to be an interesting character as she truly gets to channel and unleash her rage.

Fiksi sejarah favorit aku!!! Buku ini membahas kesengajaan sosial dalam sistem pendidikan, kolonialisme dan peperangan merebut daerah kekuasaan, filosofi + strategi perang, rasisme, dan penggambaran secara gamblang seberapa parah dan mengerikan kasualitas di lapangan. Anak-anak sekolah militer yang harus dewasa lebih cepat dan terjun langsung ke peperangan antara Kekaisaran Nikan dan Federasi Mugen. Hubungan spiritual orang dengan dewanya. Bagaimana syamanisme bekerja.

Buku ini didedikasikan untuk Iris, survivor kejadian nyata 'the rape of Nankin', yang adegannya pun dimasukkan ke buku ini. Menurutku pribadi, ini buku yang berani, bikin mual dan butuh untuk dibaca karena memang banyak adegan dibuku ini berdasarkan kejadian yang terjadi selama peperangan Shino antara China dan Jepang.

Jangan lupa cek trigger warning ya.

Baca ulang kali ini aku bisa lebih fokus metain tempat2 dan strateginya. Filosofi2 yang diangkat juga lebih 'kena' untuk jadi bahan pikiran.

Dulu nyelesain bahasa Inggrisnya 3 hari doang, taun 2021, dan janji gabakal baca ulang, but look at me now wkwkwkwkwk

Ceritanya tetep seru banget. Terjemahannya enak. Banyak nemuin kosakata baru terutama bahasa Indonesia untuk beberapa term warna, (yes, I'm looking at you Merah lembayung, and merah kirmizi)

Reading it with your mother tongue hits different. The pain is worse.

Did I know how the story end beforehand? Sure.
Am I sad and mad and sad again? Absolutely.

LOVED the first third, rendered speechless by the rest. Looked up the history behind it, had a moment, sat in self reflection for  2 months. Will I read the second one? Almost definitely. But as of current I’m still in the stage of weighing up the incredible world building with my own emotional sanity.

Very well written and hard to put down, but dark and challenging (not a light read for sure!). Interesting theology and world-building that felt familiar and also different. Curious to see how the story progresses in the next book.
