this was an experience i struggle to put into words. this book was so eloquently written with abundant imagery, character development, and history. the amount of world building was intense but so rich. it felt as though it was a place i had moved to and was slowly discovering it myself. the characters were bursting with personality. while this book isn’t necessarily “enjoyable” (because of the incredibly devastating subject matter), it was was such an amazing reading experience and i really want to continue with the series!

I’m absolutely speechless, and i think that alone speaks enough by itself, but i’m gonna give a few details as to why i loved this book so much.

the characters are undeniably flawed. they’re unlikable. they’re human. Rin and Altan especially, they do such terrible things and think such terrible thoughts that you almost dislike them until you remember what they’ve been through.

Yet, you’re also drawn to characters like Kitay, who went through hell and back but still manage to gain control of their humanity. Their morals.

The writing in this book was insanely brilliant. Like actually fucking amazing. I’ve never read anything like it, and if you’re thinking about picking this book up having read all of the content warnings, please do. It’s so worth it. The disturbing contents add to the story and why these characters do the things they do.

The rest of the series is already on its way to my house and I could not be more excited.
