Holy shit, I LOVED this book. An amazing combination of thoughtful, sophisticated, reflective writing and completely gripping, sometimes verging on lurid, but never-over-the-top plot. I haven't read a psychological suspense story this good since The Talented Mr. Ripley. Absolutely could not put it down, and can't believe I had never read it until now!

This was one of the best books I've read in a long time. I didn't see that plot twist coming and I was on the edge of my seat for the last 150 pages.

I can see how this became one of the classics. The writing really draws you in and you end up sympathising with those you didn't want to sympathise with, which I think is incredible. Reading the first few chapters again after finishing the book helped a bit with understanding and closing the book. I can't say I enjoyed it, but I was definitely impressed.
