The first half of the book drags a lot and is very uneventful and dare I say boring. I found especially the characters, particularly the main character, to be frustrating. She was very shy and easy to push around, so to read about her never standing up for herself was sometimes kind of a pain. However, in the second half, there was a plot twist - it wasn't the most unexpected one, but it did turn the story around a bit and made it more intriguing.

Plot is so so but the characters and writing make it worth it.

Almost every problem the narrator went through could have been easily solved if she had never agreed to what I truly believe is the worst marriage proposal in fiction I've ever seen.

the first half took me a very long time to get through, especially the beginning in monte carlo. to me it makes sense to have the book unfold in this way but it was tough to keep myself exited. it's a lovely gothic novel but i've learned that i can only take so much old money english countyside bla bla.
i've got problems with anxiety and certain passeges make you really feel the main characters anxiety and i had to take breaks when reading them.

i didn't really get the fear of mrs danvers until  the masquerade. i guess i just don't fear lesbianism lol
