Sunshine meets her match in class clown Gibsie. Best friends since they were little, everyone knows they are in love with each other. They are both too stubborn to admit it.
Gibsie has been the loveable best friend hanging out on the sidelines for much of the series. He's been the light in a lot of darkness and providing much needed humor and reprieve amidst the heavy nature of these books.
His humor is his armor and mask as we dive deeper into his psyche and personal thoughts. Nearly everyone has failed him throughout his life and his trauma is so deeply imbedded, any inkling of it surfacing creates a sense of dread for the character and reader alike.
Claire aka sunshine might drive you mad in this one. She is so obliviously self-centered. Her love runs deep for Gibsie, but her approach is off kilter. Gibsie deserved a better ending than what he got.
Don't get me started on Lizzie. She is the reigning queen of superiority in the trauma department. I know the next book is supposed to give us insight into her innerworkings and I will probably be backpedaling, but she is a shit person in this one thinking her devastation trumps everyone else's.
I love Gibsie and this book broke my heart and my spirit a bit. Again, a testament to this town and these characters that Chloe Walsh has created.
