Diese Comic-Adaption des Klassikers Der kleine Prinz wurde mir freundlicherweise vom Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Verlag in Form eines Ebooks zur Verfügung gestellt.
Der etwas über 100 Seiten lange Comic liest sich sehr schnell weg, zum einen natürlich, weil das Bild-Schrift-Verhältnis unausgewogen ist und zum anderen, weil mir die Story gut bekannt ist.
Der Zeichner Joann Sfar hat die Geschichte des kleinen Prinzen natürlich nicht neu erfunden. Die Grundstory wurde beibehalten, es wurden aber verständlicherweise viele Szenen (textlich) gekürzt und bei einigen Seiten war ich mir ziemlich sicher, dass Joann Sfar sich der künstlerischen Freiheit bedient hat. Gerade dadurch bekommt die Geschichte an einigen Stellen eine witzige Note, z.B. erscheint dem Piloten seine Schlange (die gezeichnet nie jemand von den Erwachsenen erkannt hat) in Form der Rauchschwaden, die aus seiner Zigarette heraufsteigen und sagt zu ihm so herrliche Sätze wie "you shouldn't smoke in a book for kids" oder "I'm vanishing into thin air". Solche Äußerungen haben die Story definitiv bereichert.
Der Zeichenstil ist gewöhnungsbedürftig. Mir hat er nur mäßig gefallen, da er für meinen Geschmack einfach zu unordentlich und unfertig aussah. Das könnte auch der Grund dafür sein, dass mir viele Bilder geradezu fließend (Stichwort Daumenkino) vorgekommen sind, als wären sie in aufgebrachter Bewegung (kann natürlich auch am Scrollen durchs Ebook liegen).
Auf den ersten Blick vermutet man das sicher nicht, aber mich hat der Zeichenstil und die Art wie Emotionen ausgedrückt werden, immer wieder an japanische Mangas erinnert. Die großen Augen, die in Bächen fließenden Tränen und noch viele andere Gesichtsausdrücke. Apropos Gesichtsausdrücke, das Bild in dem der kleine Prinz lacht, sieht meiner Meinung nach wie das eines wahnsinnigen Teufels aus. Es hat mich ein wenig abgeschreckt und hätte vielleicht noch mal überarbeitet werden sollen.
Richtig klasse fand ich dafür den Fuchs dessen Ohren etwa genauso groß (und buschig) sind wie sein Schwanz. Niedlich und originell.
Alles in allem ist dieser Comic eine interessante Sache, natürlich nur wenn man den kleinen Prinzen mag. Mit seinen sehr eigenen Bildern und dem an einigen Stellen versprühtem Witz bietet er gute Unterhaltung, aber mit dem Original (inklusive der Zeichnungen) kann er nicht mithalten.

2.5 stars from me, but 3 from my 10-year-old, who deemed it "confusing". I haven't read the original story, so my opinion may be different from those who have. I didn't like the art, as a start. The shading felt wrong (especially the faces, they had so many lines on them in some places) and I wasn't a fan of the artwork in general. The Little Prince, if you don't know, is a space traveler from a tiny star that is so small it only houses (seemingly) one very special plant and three knee-high volcanoes. However, you can view the sunset over 40 times in a day. The Prince goes to Earth as his 8th planet, and there he meets a man whose plane is broken. These two bond quickly.
The odd storyline did not grab me or speak to me either, until the fox made an appearance. I loved the whole segment on taming, and that helped bring into focus the bit about the flower too. Yet for most of the book, I didn't feel the love between the pilot and the Prince. I am unsure if a different artist could have improved this reading for me. I recognize many see the original as a classic children's story, and maybe I should give it a try. This one, however, I cannot recommend.

The Little Prince was my introduction to philosophical thinking in high school, so I was intrigued by this revamped graphic novel version. I don't know how much this version adds to the original; I don't know why someone would pick this up as an alternate. The colors are beautiful but I found the art odd--The Little Prince's big eyes didn't make me more sympathetic to him; he was sweet enough in the original.

The Little Prince is easily one of my top 3 favorite books. This translation differs from the original English translation since it's aimed toward young readers and has simpler language. While I read plenty of children's literature, it was tough to see the a differentiation in the translation than I'm used to, but looking through the eyes of a child, it works and conveys the message of the story without losing too much of the syntax that makes The Little Prince such a beautiful book. I wasn't a big fan of Sfar's illustrations with this work. They were a bit distracting as there is a lot going on frame by frame. I've seen her other work and I think because The Little Prince is such a simple story, Sfar's style does not match it. I'd recommend this edition to reluctant readers who enjoy comics and graphic novels. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to adult fans of The Little Prince unless they can look at it objectively and expect a juvenile adaptation of the classic.

How beautiful. Sfar's illustrations are sweet and lovely just like The Little Prince.

J'ai encore de la difficulté à lire Le Petit Prince après 15 ans...
Bordel! Que j'avais oublié le boa! Le maudit boa....
Je n'ai jamais apprécié cette petite littérature francophone. J'ai prefere lire Belphégor à mes 14 ans ou les Misérables. Durant mes 5 années au secondaire, Le Petit Prince me suivait partout, toujours inclus dans l'enseignant des cours de français. Peut-être c'est pour cette raison que je ne peux aimer cette oeuvre de conte poétique...
Peut-être un jour je serrai capable de voir la magie qui a captivé des milliers.

I really liked this book and I'm glad that my French teacher made us read it. As the first French book that I have read, it was fairly easy to understand and enjoy. I was not expecting that ending though! Can't wait to watch the movie...
