If you like ACOTAR youāre probably gonna like this one. I didnāt and so I donāt like this one either.
I was gaslit into believing until the very end that there was a plot in here. There isnāt. Things are happening to make the story move along but itās not a plot that would make any sense.
The world building is weak at best. There is a thousand different species but the antics of none are really explored. Weāre reading from the POV of a girl who knows nothing about the fae/magical world, and by the end of it she doesnāt know much more. There is a resemblance of a plot with the quicksilver as a magical substance but itās underdeveloped and underutilised and it falls more to the background until it needs to be brought back for the plot to move along and then once again is relegated to the background. Magic has no clear rules and comes in only when convenient. Doesnāt have any explanations, just keep reading, itās magic. Which I find infuriating because nothing feels like it is earned or deserved as every small hurdle is solved immediately with some type of magic conveniently popping up at the right time.
Saeris is sold to us as this great thief and fighter. However, as soon as she gets into the fae world she needs some to save her, EVERY SINGLE TIME. She has ONE fight. In the whole book. If she didnāt get saved by someone else, she would have been dead already so many timesā¦. Which would have made my experience of this book so much more enjoyable. Being stuck in her head was tiresome. Itās the typical āhatred for no good reasonā combo with prejudice and entitlement, which makes me dislike the heroine and therefore doesnāt make me want her to be with anyone at all. Kingfisher is bland. His whole personality is ābeing so dark and mysteriousā but thatās only what weāre told cuz beyond being a bit grumpy with her he seems to be liked by everyone around him and laughs and smiles with people. Donāt see much brooding there but the author tried to sell us very hard on the fact heās broody and grumpy. Still trying to find this side of him except for the first 10 chapters after which he must have had a brain transplant as he never went back to that persona⦠oh and his main characteristic is that heās obsessed with our annoying female protagonist. Thatās his main trait on top of being super strong and magical.
All the side characters are forgettable except for Carrion who quite honestly is the only layered character in there⦠The villains are cartoonish, the animal companion is boring and the rest are stereotypical side characters. You donāt get to know anyone or any species.
The writing is subpar, with a lot of swearing and too many words to say something quite straight forward. Itās repetitive and overwritten. The vocabulary used is also very random as it fits more a contemporary book than a fantasy medieval world with words such as āwish listā and āpep talkā. Not really words you would use or even know in a time where you fight with swords and have barely any access to water. Itās just poor writing all together.
The romance⦠well what romance? Itās insta lust and thatās it. Zero chemistry, zero pregame. Saeris tries to make us believe she hates him but omg heās so hot and he can smell my arousal. She aināt a virgin and she wasnāt deprived of sex for 10 years so why this unbearable lust from the first second they meet? Tension and uncontrollable lust for no reason are not really the same but the reader is being gaslit into thinking thatās what it is and I donāt like that. The hate was gratuitous as Kingfisher was nothing but nice to her from the beginning. Itās trying to give enemies to lovers but with no enemies⦠so itās just fuckbuddies to fated mates? I donāt even know how this flew by with so many people because the start of their relationship was so rough and forced that even if I found the later parts endearing, cute or steamy, it felt entirely unearned and unrealistic. I just couldnāt shake off how they were forced into this relationship by the author to appreciate their later moments which were actually nice.
Overall, the plot is not plotting, the writing is poor, the characters are annoying or one dimensional, not much redeeming qualities there. The interesting thing was the idea of it and the potential that the world has but itās all more wishful thinking than what the book has actually to offer. Itās an easy read, but for what happens in this book it could have been easily 200 pages shorter. It has a lot of similarities with ACOTAR if you skipped most of book 1 and went straight into book 2. So if you liked that one youāre probably gonna like this one. Itās easy, itās lusty, probably a good little palette cleanser for most, it just is not for me.
