This is a wonderful middle grade novel about a girl figuring out who she is in her own right, and about the people (and dogs!) of her Shenandoah town. L.M. Elliott is known for her historical fiction, and this contemporary story benefits from those strengths - a real sense of a place and of time, and an effortless way of threading together different stories and characters. I definitely recognized my younger self in this story - the audacity and the vulnerability of Ariel are what really brought this book home for me.

A funny and moving coming-of-age story with a terrific and diverse cast of characters. Ariel, the main character, will resonate with any girl who has struggled to "fit in."
