I read most of this issue during the coronavirus pandemic. Reading remains a comfort and a joy to me even in difficult times, though I find myself increasingly biased toward stories with likable characters, and especially to stories where likable characters help each other.

My three favorites this time were Alex Irvine's unusual, very nicely told novella, "Chisel and Chime," Julianna Baggott's also unusual, also very nicely told short story, "The Key to Composing Human Skin" (I found the closing paragraphs particularly effective), and Auston Habershaw's nicely told, pointed take on fairy tales, "Three Gowns for Clara" (in which I very much appreciated how the three women cared for each other).

Recommended, as always.

About my reviews: I try to review every book I read, including those that I don't end up enjoying. The reviews are not scholarly, but just indicate my reaction as a reader, reading being my addiction. I am miserly with 5-star reviews; 4 stars means I liked a book very much; 3 stars means I liked it; 2 stars means I didn't like it (though often the 2-star books are very popular with other readers and/or are by authors whose other work I've loved).
