Circe was the first time reading Greek mythology that I felt there was something in the story that I could relate to on a personal level. The re-envisioning of the same classic tales of heroes and monsters and epic fights became so much better this time when told through Miller's imagining of it all through Circe's eyes. I wish when I had taught The Odyssey in the past that I had been able to weave in Miller's work into the unit to give a much richer experience to students, those who, like me, would've gained a deeper appreciation for these ancient tales by seeing it from a different perspective.

The simple fact that Miller retells the story from Circe's eyes - to give that "evil" sorceress a voice - had me hooked me from the beginning. As the story unfolds, Circe's trials through motherhood and through honing her witchcraft were unexpectedly only overcome through sheer determination and love for her son (not simply divine power). In the end, even though it was about an infamous and powerful sorceress, she was much more human, flawed, and relatable than I was expecting and it was a welcome surprise. I recommend this to anyone wanting to reimagine some of the classic Greek myths - to hear the same stories but from a new vantage from the marginalized characters' eyes. It is a beautiful and creative retelling.

AHHHH I DONT KNOWW
i feel like the ending was good, it makes sense for her to want to be a mortal considering everyone that she’s loved is human, but i found the writing to be a bit confusing at times so it’s a 4 cause of that, but i loved the book and her work has gotten me out of a few years long reading slump, and i greatly appreciate that

The writing was stunning and the characters were captivating. It did, however, feel incredibly slow to me, which might have been my own reading slump, but I took me weeks to read this little thing. Definitely worth it, but it's substantial and by no means quick.

I liked this book. I thought a third of the way through that I would not, since Circe's feminist resolution was that violence equalled power and independence, but I was glad she grew out of it. I was very glad that the theme of this story was not the same copy and paste of every feminist's story—they learn they can have their own thoughts, they learn they have had passions and wants this whole time, they become wildly independent and do whatever they want, and a happy ending. That line of thinking always seemed so unrealistic, annoying, and overdone, I was very glad when Circe was not the same. I enjoyed this book overall.
