Amazing, fleshed out world and wonderfully written characters with all great chemistry with each other!!!

The characters are what got me through the book, even when it felt like nothing happened. The trials don’t happen until the very end and felt rushed, but reading about the characters was enough to keep me hooked.

Very excited for the direction this series is taking, especially with Sylvia’s character arc. I’m also curious to see if we’ll get another POV added. We got a bit of Aron’s POV scattered in this book, but I’d love a proper POV storyline with either Sefa or Marek too.

Will be reading the sequel, if it wasn’t obvious enough.

I feel like my rating for this book might be a bit harsh but my number one factor that I consider when rating a book was how much I enjoyed reading it and I just didn't enjoy reading this book at all.  I feel like I had this book sitting on my TBR shelf for a while, and I saw that it was available through Kindle Unlimited, so I finally got around to giving it a shot.  I'm actually happy that I read it on Kindle Unlimited instead of buying it because I would have been even more disappointed that I spent money on a book that I didn't like.  I also feel like it's kind of hard for me to pin point exactly why I didn't like it especially since the last few books that I rated poorly, I knew exactly why I didn't like them.  I feel like maybe I just didn't vibe with this book if that makes sense.  The beginning was a bit slow and hard for me to get into, and I just didn't find myself caring for the characters all that much.  I feel like it had a lot of elements that I usually like in fantasy books, but somehow, I just couldn't get into it.  There is magic and trials, and the main character is the heir to a lost kingdom that was once known for their magic, which is now forbidden.  I mean I've read stories with similar plots before that I've enjoyed, but I think because I had trouble getting into it in the beginning, I was kind of in the mindset that I wasn't going to like the rest of the book and that kind of soured my reading experience.  Again, it had a lot of elements that I usually like, there is a set up for a true enemies to lovers romance, and I don't think it is necessarily a bad book, it just wasn't for me.  I didn't enjoy reading, but there isn't anything glaringly wrong with it that would discourage others for giving it a try.  I do think the book gets better as it goes on, but I disliked the beginning of the book too much for the ending to make up for it.  This is definitely a series that I personally have to interest in continuing.

First, this is a YA book in everything but name. Sylvia only makes sense as a petulant teen. The love story is a mess. The magic never made sense. I don’t understand why it was so long. There were some interesting ideas let down by terrible pacing and inconsistent characterization. I also hated the narrator of the audiobook. It was a slog.
