I believed this would give a bunch of extra information and additional storylines but it didn’t really do that. At least all the added things were pretty basic and didn’t further the characters that much

I am one of the oddballs that actually loved The Last Jedi movie. But there was something about this novelisation that I couldn't connect to.

Unlike most novelizations I've read. This one includes a lot of extra content that we don't get in the movie. I didn't really enjoy the beginning of the book.
The extra matter at the beginning didn't engage me and the retelling seemed kind of flat, but as wet got further in the book we started to get more of the characters thoughts and feelings. It gives us quite a bit of insight that you don't actually get in the movie.

Huxs character especially changed a lot for me due to his depiction in this book. I also feel like I understand Rey better.

I believe this is my least favorite Star Wars movie but I enjoyed the novelization as it gave more background to the characters and their thoughts.

So I love The Last Jedi, a lot of people hate it but I think it's an absolutely fantastic film that gets so many things right. The Expanded Novelization makes it even better. The added characterization of Luke Skywalker and other characters is key to making this stand out. Luke's moment of reconnection with the force and his momentary decision to accompany Rey change how his character feels from the movie. The Canto Bight sequence was also not a chore to read as the movie version is at times to view. All in all I inhaled this book and was very pleased by the way the added bits played out.

Jason Fry does a compelling jump at not just adapting Rian Johnson's movie to text, but also highlighting and emphasizing the core themes and arcs of The Last Jedi. Between the additions of the deleted scenes, and the expansions of a few characters and perspectives, Johnson's central ideas are allowed more time to breathe than you could have in a blockbuster film. Fry's prose is light and breezy, making this a quick and easy read.
