the best book I’ve read all year!!! Honestly I loved this book, it was the perfect mix of plot and character development. I pretty much read this whole book in one sitting it was that good. I couldn’t recommend this book more.

Not gonna lie I purchased this book because of fomo, and the fact that the cover illustration is so mesmerising just add my motivation to do so. I have no single idea before about Chinese legend of Chang’e, The Moon Goddess. I just dive into this book and got hooked.
Di bagian awal-awal, aku merasa plotnya terlalu cepat. Mulai dari Xingyin yang penasaran dengan ‘cahaya’ yang muncul di kamarnya, sampai pada saat dia menjadi pelayan di Golden Lotus Mansion. Aku tidak mendapatkan emosi yang tepat saat The Empress datang ke Pure Light Palace, bahkan saat Xingyin dan Ping’er melarikan diri dan dikejar oleh pasukan Celestial, ketegangannya tidak begitu berasa dan sangat datar.
Tapi, saat cerita sudah mulai masuk tentang kehidupan Xingyin di Jade Palace, alurnya mulai menarik. Apalagi saat Xingyin sudah mulai menjadi pasukan Celestial dan melaksanakan berbagai misi. Every battle scene made me hold my breath. Sampai berasa ikut ngos-ngosan dan capek.
Untuk karakter-karakternya, aku suka gimana karakter Xingyin berkembang. And I love how the author didn't make her like a saint. Xingyin dan pergolakan batinnya menjadi sebuah hal yang membuatku berasa naik roller coaster. At times, I feel like I didn't understand why she did what she did, but then I totally got it.
Bukan hanya keputusan-keputusan yang dia ambil saat berada di medan perang, atau hal yang berhubungan dengan ambisinya, bahkan keputusannya menyangkut Liwei dan Wenzhi pun made me feel a lot of things.
Oh, and that love triangle! Penulisnya parah banget sampai bikin bingung mau dukung siapa. Dua-duanya protektif terhadap Xinying, and always got her back. At least, until the truth come out and we all know siapa yang harus didukung.
Untuk ukuran satu buku, menurutku memang plotnya padat banget. It made me overwhelmed at some point. Harus ingat berbagai nama dan tempat, atau scene-scene penting. I would say this book is plot driven but I can't ignore how good the character development is. Karena ini diceritakan dari sudut pandang Xingyin, jadinya fokusnya paling banyak di dia.
I shed a tear when I read one scene. A powerful scene dare I say. The moment when Xingyin is in the brink of death because of Emperor's wrath, General Jianyun and Shuxiao brought a whole army to ‘save’ her.
Last but not least, I love the world-building! Eksekusinya cantik banget. Setiap tempat punya karakteristik dan ‘purpose’nya masing-masing. Narasinya deskriptif sehingga membuatku bisa mengimajinasikan suasananya dengan baik.
