“Some wounds cannot be healed.
Some wounds never close, never scar.
But the further away from the injury, the easier it became to smile.”
“I wanted to be me before there was her, but I didn't know how.”
“That's why I found it strange that no word exists for a parent who loses a child. If children lose their parents, they are orphans. If a husband loses his wife, he's a widower. But there's no word for a parent who loses a child.

I've come to believe that the event is just too big, too monstrous, too overwhelming for words. No word could ever describe the feeling, so we leave it unsaid.”
“I was determined to live where sunlight streamed through open curtains and children played in the yard, where pictures took up too much space on the walls and hushed conversations were a thing of the past.”
“but she would harness the sadness.

“but she would harness the sadness.
She would harness it and tame it and keep it still and quiet.”
“But sometimes I think that sadness drilled down deep and some of it might just be there for good."
“You never know when you might need kindness from people."

told in a backward sort of way that makes it mysterious but not like a big surprise. i like the dual narratives and the characters were so lovable. not enough to make me cry tho.

The dual stories of Joe and Norma were a beautiful exploration of grief and belonging.
This book felt like such an effort. I struggled with the writing structure of changing timelines within the same paragraph. It was a heartbreaking story and definitely felt the weight of it but because it felt obvious to be after the first 2 chapters what was going to happen, I think I just kind of became disconnected. I found Norma to be a bit frustrating as a character and Joe very unlikable who I might have been the point but it was hard for me to want to pick up this book and finish it. I only did because I could feel it looming. I was so hopeful for this but it didn’t land for me personally
