I felt more and more overwhelmed as I progressed further into this novel. And then when I got to the ending, I felt like I was being smacked across the face with a plank twice my size. If you’re looking for a happy ending, newsflash: there are no happy endings in life because to live means to struggle. This book also makes me never want to visit an exotic island again. (Especially in light of how Hawaii is struggling to keep up with tourist demands a year and a half into the pandemic.) HERE COMES THE SUN is not as cheery as the title suggests but rather pretty depressing when we get to see inside the industries that thrive when white men colonize an island and exploit its people under the cover of “business.” I want to hate this novel for all these feelings but I cannot because the writing was superb and the story was raw. I felt the weight of Margot’s high-functioning insanity — her brokenness and anger turned her into someone who could no longer feel, someone who was slowly losing her humanity. The characters are all really well fleshed out and I am in awe of this kind of storytelling.
