Nick Mason lived a life of small-time crime until he didn't. Until he was caught. And his life changed forever. Never giving up his friends, never speaking out against why he got 20 years and they got free. Nick Mason lives a day under lock and key until one person approaches him with an offer he has no choice but to accept: a life lived on the outside of prison, but definitely still very much an imprisoned life. This thrilling read starts a new series perfect for fans of Harlan Coben, Janet Evanovich and early John Grisham.

My first read by Steve Hamilton and it did not disappoint. Although a bit slow paced at times, it kept me engaged.
Narrative follows Nick, a convicted felon serving 25-to-life for his part in a robbery gone bad that ended with two dead: his friend and a cop.
While in prison, Nick meets Darius Cole, and after a few conversations, finds himself not only out of jail, but living in a fancy townhouse with classic muscle cars at bus disposal. All of this comes with a price - a contract with unknown terms and jobs to be determined with a phone call.
Nick soon finds what those jobs are going to be, and has to navigate his new life and what that means. In saving his family and those around him, he may just lose his soul.
This can be read as a stand alone but the end seems to set this one up as part of a series with more books to come.

I like this writer, but his books are violent and tend to excuse violence. He also tends to fall into too many tropes and cliches. Given all that, it's a decent story.
This book had an interesting premise and I liked the story, but it's the type of book I usually listen to on audio and I think this one might have been a better listen than it was as a read.

Pros:
I have never read a book quite like this and I really found myself enjoying it. It takes morally grey and places it in the real world while still allowing you the inner glimpse of why the character is doing these things.
I love that this both is and isn’t a detective novel. You still have the procedure of it all but the difference in perspective keeps it from falling into common themes.
Cons:
While this sets up the series incredibly well I would have been very frustrated if it was the only one out and I didn’t know when or if it would continue.

Not exactly unpredictable but it was fun.
Fun characters. A fun premise. GREAT writing! Check it out. A short joyride.

Hamilton's a hell of a writer, but I think this one would have worked better if a little more time had been spent developing any one of the several protagonists he sets against our anti-hero. Also, the Lincoln Park Zoo does not charge admission (pg. 119 or so).

This was a great read. I haven't read his other series yet, and it's set in Michigan, but they're now on my list. A thriller where you're not sure what's coming next.
