This book enthralled me from the beginning. Kate Morton’s writing style was right up my alley. Reflective, very detailed, multiple povs. All the characters felt ethereal yet they were all still flawed. All the side characters were so developed and intertwined into this web of a story that I would struggle to tell you who was actually the protagonist. Despite all the detail of the characters I had multiple audible gasp moments, and would still say it is a plot-heavy book. At first I did not like the supernatural aspect to it as one of characters was a “ghost” but near the end it fell into place nicely and contributed a lot to the message of the story, how a place can tell a story. Reminded me a lot of the saying “If walls could speak”. It was non-linear which I adored as it built a lot of suspense. I also adored the fact that it was generational, so much history to uncover and depth. If you like historical fiction you will eat this up. I urge everyone to not be frightened by it being a long read as once you are done with the book you will just be begging for more. It is ultimately a story of mystery and how truth slips through the cracks of time. Near the end it explores themes of remorse which was profound. I wouldn’t say it had the most satisfying ending, but tied it all together well. I will never forget this book, and highly recommend it!
