DID NOT FINISH: 40%

DNF at 40%. I wanted to know the mystery behind the monster and the madness but I’m finding I’m not that invested enough to continue. I do not care for Juliette and Roma. I found their relationship/dynamic bland and lacking angst. I don’t care about the other characters neither. However, I was really enjoying the historical elements. I do like Gong’s writing style and even though I’m not invested in this book, I’ll give one of her other books a try.
medium-paced

This was a lovely step away from a lot of the YA I have read recently! Romeo and Juliet + a horrifying plague monster - I was engaged until the last page!

Juliette and Roma were lovers. Each belongs to different gang. Then, because of an event, they became enemies. Their families hate each other, and mostly Juliette and Roma. Some years after the event, a madness comes to Shanghai, and the two of them must work together in order to save the people. Can they do it? Are they willing to forget the past, in order to work together? Read this book to find out!
I love the book from the bottom of my heart. It is just so great!!!!! AHAHHAVEV!!!!!! I’ve read many books where the mc is a girl, who thinks she can’t be beaten, that she is the best and it’s her only personality trait. But These Violent Delight? This book has a strong femal mc, who thinks she’s one of the best, and it isn’t her only personality trait. In addition Chloe Gong made an excellent job at giving characters traits; even though they are side characters or are just in one chapter, they have stories.
The one thing that disliked about this book, is not letting characters stay dead. It irritates me, and Chloe Gong made a good job at not doing so supernaturally. But, it still bothers me in some way.
In conclusion this book is worth reading, and your money. Thank you for reading!
