It was an interesting read. I finished it in just one day.

The book isn't flawless. The begining where
Ellie touches Fury inappropriately and feels desire towards him while he's in such a horrible state
threw me off. Despite it, I decided to give the book a chance and I don't regret it.

There was a good development of the plot and a nice character progression. Watching Ellie become from an outsider to an important part of the New species' life was fascinating to follow. The different plot twists and that how the story around Homeland, its enemies and residents progress is something very interesting to me and I would like to explore more and more of the lore. The plot has a lot to offer and I believe that in the next books there's so much to explore, if that's what the author focuses on.

Now, for the characters. Ellie and I didn't start off the right hook because of that one thing she did in the prologue of the book. With time though, she had a redemption arc and I could see she was genuinely sorry so I could try to forget, couldn't forgive, and just moved on. She was brave, fiercely protected those whom she cares about and did everything she could to contribute to the community, to defend and keep them safe.

Fury was such an amazing character. I could understand his pain, his frustration and his sadness in the beginning. Although his actions towards Ellie were wrong, I could understand where he was coming from and to me, his initial reaction was justified. I can't go too hard on him - since the beginning, he is a character that touched me. I liked how he progressed throughout the book too, he might be my favorite character.

About the relationship between the main characters, it was good. I wish the burn was slower, that we could have a closer view on how Fury drops his grudge against Ellie and comes to forgive her and move on. The only thing that's missing to me is seeing the way they became from nearly enemies to people who were so deeply connected to each other.

The secondary characters were also awesome. Justice pissed me off a little by how he refused to trust his closest friend on multiple occasions but at the same time, I could understand where he's coming from. Breeze and the other girls were awesome. Tiger and Slade were so intriguing and their humor is something I adore.

Overall, the book was good to me and I enjoyed it. I can't wait getting into Slade's story because it seems very interesting.

I honestly felt like I was literally reading a movie. This book really did a great job in portraying how it would be like if the DNA of human beings were actually altered, what hardships would these people face in society, etc.

Sexual assault, violence and abuse are mentioned in the book. So if you are triggered by any of this, then I would advise not to read this book.

3 star read, some mildly 😬 descriptions that may or may not be describing diverse characters because...genetic manipulation or something. When talking about someone looking like they have "Native American" ancestry because of skin color but that they're supposedly too tall and broad to be solely NA... who on EARTH would assume Germanic ancestry instead of Pacific Islander. Answer: White ladies. I realize that she's trying to describe someone as multiracial but she didn't do a good job. I've read WAY WORSE, but it was not good. At least it wasn't racist. The rest of the story was quick, building up the overarcing skulduggery of the series, typical genetic experiments escape their masters and find Twue Wuv type of story that I really enjoy.
ETA: pay attention to the content warnings, there's some...dubious bits.
