David Copperfield is one of my favorite Dickens, but I just didn’t love this book. Making a decent portion of this book about Demon’s drug addiction made it a difficult read. I also didn’t love the ending. I knew how it was supposed to end based on David Copperfield, of course, but this felt a little haphazard. It was like the author remembered all of the sudden which two characters were supposed to end up together.

But time passed and eventually my mind had only one thought in it as regards childhood. For any kid that gets that as an option: take that sweet thing and run with it. Hide. Love it so hard. Because it’s going to fucking leave you and not come back.
this book enraptured me. as a northerner and a city dweller this was a much needed perspective. tears running down my cheeks as i type this.

I started out enjoying this book. It started out as emotionally wrought but there were signs of reality. But as the story dragged on, it seemed like Kingsolver took every bad action that could happen to one person & pile it Demon. Could all this happen to one person? Yes. But it’s also stretching and dipping into trauma porn.
I was with Kingsolver on the rural poverty and opioid epidemic. But introducing Dory took me out. She didn’t get prescribed an opioid. She clearly had done drugs before her 1st time with Demon. She made the choice to be her father’s caregiver and gave up on life. I had no sympathy for her character. She was under developed and just a drag on Demon.
Overall the book was too long.
