A strongman seeking only recognition and prosperity encounters the religious colonization of his culture: it has no regard for his way of life or respect for his hard-earned symbols of power.

In Things Fall Apart, Chinua Achebe uses the novel to speak to the audience as if it is a younger generation being passed down oral tradition. The reader not only hears the story of a great conflict between an Igbo tribe and British colonizers, but also the rituals and customs of the people and their significance. In the village of Umoufia, a society exists that is living now the way it has for thousands of years, where it has an economic system, a legal system, celebrations, religion, and a unified identity. This is told through the eyes of a man named Okonkwo, who experiences a rise and fall of Umoufia. He has his own personal struggles related to family and livelihood. For both himself and the collective village identity, being inflexible leads to fragmentation among people. Later, as British missionaries become a part of village life, they begin to exercise more power and influence over the people. The biggest clash occurs as the British fail to recognize the tribe’s way of living and customs, and the British devalue them to merely a group of primitive people, as opposed to tribes that have been living and thriving on the land for thousands of years. This mindset and failure to see people as people would lay the groundwork for hundreds of years of atrocities and exploitation.

2.5. Read for English. It was okay. I actually wrote my final essay for World Lit II on this and "Bless Me, Ultima." Still one of my favorite papers I've ever written, and no, I don't care if that comes across as narcissistic lol. That paper took forever with needing to comb through both books for quotes in addition to research! I was not an English major lol.
It’s been a while since I read a five star book. I really enjoyed this. It’s primarily takes place within a single village in Africa in the 1800s. It also covers the beginning of European colonization. I found the story fascinating.
