Amazing fantasy right here. I'd even rank it up with Brandon Sanderson, Robert Jordan and some other big name fantasy novelists. It was hard when it came to putting it down and doing homework or going to work! The only small grief is the ending. The chapter before the last one is a good place to leave it but the last chapter was, though informative, inherently disturbing. I very much hope there is going to be a sequel, but is recommend this book whether there is it not. Maybe close the the book before that last chapter if you can force yourself.
Back to my review. The protagonist, Vaelin, is an amazingly insightful character with surprising depth and it is fascinating to follow his bloody, traumatic, courageous childhood and watch him grow into a somber, weary yet incredibly powerful warrior. You must read this.

The perfectly executed classic epic fantasy. Everything an epic fantasy nerd could ever ask for in 600 pages.

Blood Song details the tale of Vaelin Al Sorna as he's raised and trained as a Brother of the Sixth Order.

“The Sixth Order wields the sword of justice and smites the enemies of the Faith and the Realm.”

The book is written using the same framing device as Patrick Rothfuss’s Kingkiller Chronicles’. Vaelin, now known as Hopekiller, relating his story to the royal chronicler as to how he ended up set for execution before intervention sees him on a new path in the present day.

Growing up and trained alongside fellow abandoned boys, there is a strong sense of brotherhood and unbreakable loyalty which was uplifting and captivating to read. I’ve always loved found and forged family, and the honour and love shared experience binds them to.

Whilst the blood song Vaelin has appears some sort of magic, it isn’t a huge part of this book, but it is apparent it will play a larger part later on. This subtle fantasy aspect is reminiscent of Assassin’s Apprentice where I’m sure it will grow as Vaelin learns more and develops himself.

This was so addicting. I loved the unreliability of his narration to the chronicler and the political manipulations and the secrets that are teased out as the story progresses. Not to mention his own moral unrest and uncertainty in the Faith, the King, and what he fights for.

I would recommend this to fans of Nevernight, The Forgetting Moon, Assassin’s Apprentice, and Red Sister.

OKAY wow this was such an amazing and fun and additive book! Everyone told me they loved it and I can definitely see why!

The story follows Vaelin al Sorna who, at the age of ten, is left at the gates of the Sixth Order by his father. The Sixth Order are the elite soldiers of the faith and Vaelin endures harsh training for years. His story is amazing and I was hooked from the very beginning. I went into this expecting it to be entertaining, if a little generic, so I was surprised by how enjoyable I found it. The writing was smooth and the descriptions were vivid. I was swept up in the story and fell in love with Vaelin and the other characters.

I really enjoyed when things turned a little more political and dark. I am VERY curious about where the story will go in the next two books and I can't wait to read them! Anthony Ryan is a very talented author- if the series continues this strongly then he may become a new favourite author of mine.
