This book didn't make me cry, but it made me want to cry. It didn't speak for me, but it spoke to me. It showed me ugliness and cruelty so I could appreciate better its beauty and light. Nnemdi is already alive. She's alive in this book.

A beautiful, emotional book. I had tried to read this book when it first came out, but wasn’t in the right frame of mind to enjoy it, so it has been languishing in a to-be-finished-later pile. I finally picked it up today and started again from the beginning and couldn’t put it down. I can’t say much without giving the story away, but I loved the relationships and the ideas of identity woven throughout. There were a few things I never felt got explained and I’m not sure if it was intentional or just not fully realized by the author. The characters were flawed but I rooted for all of them anyway, everyone was just trying to do what they believed was best.
