Sad so very sad. There is an inkling of light in this book, but it is very well written and captivating.
Spoiler
Honestly this would have been a sold 4-starrer until the gratuitous rape scene. There was no reason for that. Everything the author wanted to accomplish with this book could have been accomplished without the rape scene. It was not necessary and I'm just very disappointed because I had a high hopes for this book. I feel very defeated right now.
Haven't read something this lyrical and gorgeous in a while. Reminded me of the books we read in high school, full of sorrow and lush language and magic realism.
2 stars may be too... harsh. This book had some beautiful moments. It was written well, with lovely visual language - and an interesting concept.
But the characters were some of the most passive, frustrating people imaginable - everything was happening to them, not because of them. The metaphors were confusing, and at times, conflicting. I'm surprised at how positive the reviews are and how some find it their favourite book of all time... I don't know. Maybe I'm being harsh, and I'm sorry for that, but I just could not connect to it.
If you especially liked The Awakening of Miss Prim and The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake, you'd love this. If not, you will give it 2 stars.

This book isn't flawless, but it's beautiful. The whole atmosphere of this book is heartwarming although the story itself is tragic and sad at many times. At first, it didn't seem to be anything than just a story about a peculiar family. I like the story, I love the setting (those references about French bread are just so <3), I care about the characters, I want to keep reading to know what will happen to them, but there's something off that it's hard to explain. Until the twist came and this book started to really make sense and it's really sad but beautiful at the same time. Let's be honest, though, I wanted to rate this book 4 stars, but then this quote happened:
I loved you before, Ava. Let me love you still.
I JUST CAN'T OKAY, MY HEART IS WEAK, I HAVE TO GIVE THAT QUOTE AND THE STORY BEHIND THAT QUOTE 5 STARS
Anyway, I love the ending so so much.
