4.5 If I'm being honest! I really, really enjoyed this urban fantasy story. It had everything I love about the genre in it from cool powers, a strong female lead, a unique world, a sexy love interest, and lots of intrigue. The characters were great and easy to relate to, the twists surprising, and the action intense. There's a ton of promise here, and while I have a lot more on my TBR pile at the moment to get through, I'm genuinely interested in giving the rest of this series a try. It was just so much fun and the options for anything to happen so open! The only reason I didn't give it five stars was because in the beginning there was a lot going on, and I almost felt I was getting information overload. That said, a lot of my questions were answered when the story took its unexpected turns. Sunaya is an awesome female lead for this series and I really do want to learn more about her, her powers, and her future conflicts. Definitely a story all urban fantasy lovers should check out!

The main character is childless and annoying, which made it very hard to get through this book. I also felt that the world was confused in what it wanted to be.

Can't wait to get the next book in the series

I was surprised by this book. Free books are usually ok but not always. This was a really good read. I hate cliffhangers but this wasn't too bad.

Burned by Magic is certainly one of those gobble-up books where it's easy to just fall into and keep turning the pages. There's nothing really shocking or incredibly detailed that needs to be paid attention to otherwise you'd miss it. It's entertaining and it allows the reader to mindlessly eat it up. While I enjoyed the ride, I found it a little hard to like Sunaya.

Sunaya comes off as that typical heroine bad ass in a paranormal fantasy. She's got your leather pants, the knives and cool weapons, a strong sense of justice, and of course, she has sexual tension with the hot guy who is also, conveniently, the strongest mage (but in her words, that's just her entering heat and it's nothing more, obviously). She also has the qualities of a Mary Sue. She's a hybrid with incredible magic, she's incredibly skilled in combat, she's also low-key hot (no one mentions it, but readers know), and things are solved magically for her. Like I mentioned earlier, this is a book that is entertaining and requires little attention. It almost feels like things get handed to her. She comes off as a bad ass at the surface, but in the end, she needs to be rescued by Fenris or Ianis.

She is no Kate Daniels and I would not recommend this book for any one who is expecting a Kate Daniels. However, if you're looking for entertainment in a short amount of time, this is a book to pick up.

For a first Book i really enjoyed it... there is enough going on to grab my interest without overwhelming me.....

I liked the characters they all had consistent personalities throughout being multidimensional and really interesting.

The Author made the smallest detail really interesting, an example being the shifter's had their own currency so a silver coin wouldn't burn them, along with loads of other little bits which really built On a part of the way the world was....

Sunaya is a Hybrid shifter, After Losing her Mentor to Silver poisoning, She is abatement to uncover whats really going on, During a wrestle with a Rhino secrets are uncovered and Sunaya ends up under the watchful eye of Iannis the Cheif Mage.

The read has a Kate Daniels vibe with a slash of steampunk i really liked it...

The reason for the 4 stars rather than 5 is i wanted the world to have been explained a little more.... why was it like the way it was? what is it?... they seem to have some kinds of technology as there are strobe lights in a club at the start of the book... Yet other things made me think Victorian era and steam punk like the larder Carriages Steam bikes, magic to heat the water..... it was all a bit disorienting i just didn't get it.

Burned by Magic is book one in The Baine Chronicles by Jasmine Walt. It’s a decent start to the series.

This is my first taste of Jasmine Walt and I have to say this Urban Fantasy series captivated me. I ended up bing reading all the way to book seven in The Baine Chronicles series. It’s unique, magical, and entertaining.

Sunaya is our lead heroine who is a hybrid (mage/shifter). She’s kept her status hidden for years until an unfortunate event happens. I liked and didn’t like Sunaya. She’s got good and bad qualities and I’m hoping we see some character growth as the story continues. She’s rude and snarky in this installment. I’m all for strong willed heroines with flaws, but it needed to be toned down a notch here.

I was captivated from start to finish. The characters are unique and easy to fall in love with. We’re treated to an interesting world full of mages, shifters, and humans. We have groups against other groups, drug rings, mysteries and a handsome Mage who might be Sunaya’s only hope if she can curb her snark.

Sunaya’s story is just beginning. I look forward to seeing what happens next with Sunaya and how she will grow and evolve.

Burned by Magic was a fun read. If you enjoy UF then this series might be for you.

I'm a big Patricia Briggs fan so when I saw this one as a freebie on IBooks comparing it to her I had fairly low expectations but it was really good! I was going to download the next one but they are only on Amazon (which I don't use because they are basically out to destroy indie bookstores). SO I'm hoping to find hardcopy somewhere.

I loved this!

I've really been trying to find a strong female character i can stand personality wise. I hate the typical she's so not everyones attracted to her usual looks or she's plain but for some reason the hottest men are attracted to her. Honestly, this character feel a while spectrum of emotions sadness, fear and loneliness. she's extremely brave even in the face of all this. She got friends with men and women. Only attracted to one guy no love triangle nonsense. Story is really interesting a whole world built that I'm deeply interested in learning more about. Rarely have a supernatural novel were humans are aware of mages and shifters and what not. Very different.
