It has many good points, but the second part of the book was too boring. I expected much more...

I stole this book, some earrings, a brownie and beer from my sister's house which goes to show she's awesome and I like her even though she's going to cry tears of blood if she tries to tackle her birthday gift (der reinen Vernunft) while I'll be happily sitting on mine, a giant (seriously, HUGE) pouf. So why should I be jealous if she gets all wised up in history, sociology, law and all those books she's reading as long as my butt is comfortable. I might have slept through parts of Hamlet but I was awake for the asian food, and I got the important parts, like Hamlet yelling to Ophelia: Get thee to a nunnery, go, and quickly too! Such a mean thing to say to someone who would have liked to get you laid.

I wanted to binge on something today; vin, de poésie ou de vertu, à ma guise. So as long as I was going in full buried nose mode I needed a book. Unfortunately, I was reading this and for lack of better suggestions in fiction, this is what I read: the fortune of the arab world. Good for me. And all the reasons why we as a generation really shouldn't have children because they are going to find themselves someday in a serious Children of Men vs Cormack McCarthy-type scenario. It builds on my impression that humanity as a whole doesn't vote, or get into politics, because of heart nor reason, but because of pride. The most dangerous men are just trying to be actors of their own story. And there is SO. MUCH. MURDER. Did any arab leader of the XXth century die peacefully in his bed?

So, anyway. Amin Maalouf preaches to the choir. Does everybody know him? Let's present him anyway. He was born in Beyrouth, the son of a a Lebanese father and an Egyptian mother, in a family of journalists, and right now he's a French academician who clearly loves French as much as anybody could. I think my sister discovered him when she briefly became best friends with an Algerian girl in high school, and she's read Samarkande and In the Name of Identity: Violence and the Need to Belong (so fiction too) but it's my first book. He very kindly goes through recent story- but this was written in 2009, so it's dated, because so much political shit has hit the fan in the last decade. It's not just an essay about why he kind of misses the Cold War in the sense that men used to talk about concepts and not identity; and he knows a lot about identity, as expats always do. When I think about this I always remember my second generation American and political science graduate friend Cheng, who made us laugh like crazy with anecdotes of his adventures in mainland China but really knew a thing or two about identity and I feel like he taught me a lot. And he occasionally reads my reviews so thanks Cheng if you're reading this.

Le dérèglement du monde contains new ideas, be it because of my ignorance of the subjects or because they truly are original. It had certainly never ocurred to me that the strenght of the catholic clergy had contributed to the flourishing of a fringe area of liberty between the religious and the political powers, or that islam's anticlericism had had the opposite effect. Direct contact with god is dangerous in many ways (cf mormonism and its decididly inmoral revelations) but isn't it best for the ultimate goal? Yes if the goal is independent judgement, but Maalouf would rather burn 5-6 fledging heretics at the stake than have the whole of a religion go adrift in uncertain waters.

Regarding cohabition, he recommends an effort to avoid confining individuals in their comunity and holding on to western values as universal (he even lists them: democracy, human rights, equality, individual liberty, laicity. It's funny in the sense that those 5 conflict all the time when brought into practice). He seems exhausted, and he had not even lived throught the 2000. I'm so sick of talking about identities that I've entirely dropped out of politics in order to stay out of the catalan question.

Regarding climate change and his motives to hope (Obama) I'm not ever going to comment because it's not going well.

If I allow myself to do a small translation, The disruption of the world, published in 2009 in french under the title ” Le dérèglement du monde”, is an alarming essay written by Amin Maalouf which provides analysis of our modern world and many unpleasant facts of how modern civilization is slowly drifting.

Though I find Mr. Maalouf's train of thought more european and utopic, it's still quite a good essay for the insights it provides on the new world order and how humanity is slowly fading as capitalism inserts itself deeper as a way of life more than an economic scheme.

He even dives into the topic of ecology which grows to be more alarming by the day.

In a nutshell, the book is great for the topics it covers and it's essentially a stepping stone for someone who wants a thinker's view on how the disruption started.

Here's a comprehensive summary that walks you through the book in more details https://www.thebonsaibook.com/2019/09/05/worlddisruptionbookreview/

ok I'm a bit angry
