BRAVO!

This book was good, but DENSE. It's organized a little strangely, and I think I would have preferred it to not include the final section set in the present day. Sashenka herself is fascinating and infuriating, but I appreciated such a complicated heroine. I don't know much about the Russian revolution, so I enjoyed this peek into that time period.

Definitely a 5 star read for me! This was a hard book to put down. I recommend this one highly.

i find it difficult to rate this one. although i enjoyed the story a lot, i do have problems with some of the writing. i would give it 4 or even 5 stars based on how into the book i was but from a critical point of view, it would get 3 stars.

Some of the exposition was clunky, but other than that this book was amazing. The story kept you guessing and moved along quickly. It was emotional, historically faithful, and beautifully constructed. I love Simon Montefiore, so I knew I would love this, and I was right.

This book has left me overwhelmingly impressed and it a true example of a compelling story written with such intricate detail that keeps aspects of the characters lives a mystery till literally the last chapter.

As my first book both based in Russia and written by Montefiore I was really impressed and each of the three parts holds their own unique story whilst simultaneously binding together with each other. My favourite section to read was definitely the third, as more is revealed and a true picture of the characters lives is shown.

This book took me a long time to get into, partly because I went into this book with next to no knowledge of Russian history, however by the end it was definitely worth the read and Sashenka is a gripping main character! I would recommend this book to a friend 😊 can't wait to read the next in the series.

I think this was one of the first "grown up" history fiction novels I ever read after the Book Thief and it has stayed with me ever since. I thought it was a fascinating tale of love, family & politics in an uncertain period in Russian history. It is still today one of my favourite books!

It took me a while to get into this but when i did i couldn't put it down.

I read this book 10 years ago, and it still sticks with me. I still recommend it to people who are interested in Russian history/historical fiction. A hard, heartbreaking and fascinating novel.
