This used to be one of my go-to books to sneak into my bedroom at night and read under the covers. I reread it tonight after watching the first movie (which was a pretty faithful adaptation) and was reminded of how entertaining I found it as a child.
I highly recommend it to young readers as it's a fast-paced and fun read that encourages children to embrace a balance of reading and playing outdoors.

Bean is constantly being told to play with her new next-door neighbor Ivy, but Ivy is so BORING that Bean just rolls her eyes. One day, Bean inadvertently starts talking with Ivy and discovers that she is actually quite entertaining and a potential partner in crime. The result is an adventure-filled day that only Ivy & Bean could have.
Meh... I think this book could appeal to young readers looking for more books in the Ramona ilk, but it didn't really do it for me.

I really didn't like this one too well and my daughter didn't either. I grabbed it cause I thought it sounded like a cute story and it was in my daughter's reading level plus the cover was kinda cute. I just thought that she'd really like it- Well, I reckon that I was wrong. We read it together and it wasn't grabbing her attention. It doesn't bother me that it contained witchcraft but I don't necessarily think that it's really appropriate for a 7 yr old to be reading. I don't really know if I will continue to read this with my daughter or just find a different series. After we were finished reading this, she didn't have anything to say about it. Normally she will say something to the fact of "That was really good, Mommy!" and then ramble on about the story, but this time when it was over, I got nothing. If it isn't gonna get my daughter's attention and get her talking about what happened in the story, then I'm guessing this book just wasn't for us.

Fabulous when a writer can masterfully jump between audiences. Ivy & Bean are stinkers in the best possible way.

I only gave this book 2 stars not because I’m an adult reading a beginning reader book but because I’m not a fan of Ivy or Bean. First Bean teases her older sister (which is typical of sisters and fine) but then when she makes friends with Ivy, Bean goes out of her way to be mean to Nancy and the mom doesn’t do anything. It’s basically my childhood. My sister was mean to me and then allowed to do things just like Bean. Also as a bookseller I’ve been recommending this book to parents for their little girls because a coworker recommended it but based on what I read I don’t think I’ll continue recommending it. Some parents wouldn’t like that it involves “witchcraft”. Not a fan.

IVY & Bean are charming, hilarious and all so real in this tale of friendship and growing up doing the crazy and silly things kids do. There is no moralising here it is just telling the story sit is, and both Ivy & Bean in their own ways are brilliant characters. Number two will be up shortly!
