I loved the ending and I love the characters. This made me cry which I really did not expect until I was crying.

This took me a bit to get into, but after like 25% it really grabbed me. Sometimes the writing was repetitive and I wish there was more of the ghost. Also begging authors to stop describing what characters are wearing in such detail.

Okay, so I am a pretty emotional person IRL but I rarely cry at books. This book had me WEEPING at the end, and I’m not sure why other than it just hit so hard in a soft place. It exposed so many vulnerabilities and built an incredible love story between two people but also redemptive familial and communal love. The love beyond the central relationship in this story and the redemption and acceptance for all of the MCs in this book hit me right in the feels. Maybe it was the glass of wine I had while I was finishing it, either way, tears were shed and I had to go get a hug from my husband after I put my Kindle down.

These MCs were just so damned relatable and lovable and imperfect and *sigh*

The story Angelina reels out with curses and great-great-great grandparents and vulnerability and *tension* was absolute perfection. Alex’s family was everything. The tiny town of Freedom, Kansas was suffocating and beautiful. Alex was prickly and mean and 100% relatable and believable. The forced proximity and HEAT between Alex and Jeremiah was tangible.

And I haven’t even gotten to Jeremiah.

JEREMIAH POST. Gang. This man. He’s big, he’s handsome, he’s got glasses, he’s SMART as hell, he’s “exuberant” about everything. He uses big words. He asks for consent in the sexxxxxxxxiest ways just…🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠🫠 he’s a great big lovely ball of sunshine with a sad gooey middle and I am a sucker for that.

The spoiiiiice in this. Whew. It’s not like all spice but when it hits it HITS. Get ready.

👍🏻RECOMMENDED. This book is MAGICAL. Basically perfect. Read it. Thank me later.

This was such a cute and steamy read! I loved the audiobook, so I definitely recommend listening to it. I enjoyed the paranormal elements that were mixed into the story and they were such a great tool to discover things the characters themselves wouldn't know and move the story forward. I appreciated the family dynamics and how true they were to so many Latinx families, particularly those who are living in the U.S. and straddling that line between assimilation and keeping their culture and customs alive.

Plus, that masturbation scene through the wall is one of the hottest things I've ever read. PHEW.

Okay so I had a hard time with the spice at times because I’d never read something that used the anatomical names of things during like… explicit spicy scenes, but then that became meta. Besides that, the spice was ✨🤌🏻✨ and the book was lovely. Alex was hard to like for me for a good majority of the book, but once her protective layer was peeled back a bit,   Everything made sense.

Please do not sleep on this book! It has everything- ghosts, mystery, hidden inheritance, family drama, and a spicy love story. I enjoyed this book so much, I will say the ending is a little rushed. This book would’ve benefitted from an epilogue to help tie things together. I really liked Alex, she was so full of passion for the people she cared about. Also, it needs to be repeated that this book is hot-
the scene where they masturbate with each other through a wall while in their own adjacent bedrooms is so steamy and will continue to live rent free in my mind
. Highly recommend this read!

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Angelina M. Lopez has crafted a diverse romance with a strong, smart, fiercely independent, brash female lead and a softer (but still huge and imposing-looking), shy, smart male lead. I'm not a fan of instant physical intimacy, and some of the passion doesn't feel quite as realistic given how quick things happen, but their chemistry is VERY strong--and the sex scenes are written with great detail (definitely a spicy book!)

But it's not just the romance that's noteworthy here. Lopez's characterization isn't one-dimensional and doesn't rely on stereotypes. The way she writes Alex, Jeremiah, and Alex's whole family is complex; I wanted to learn more about all of the characters and the town of Freedom, so I'm looking forward to her continuing this series.

I'd urge romance-lovers to pick this one up!

This book was brilliant. It started with a bang - literally - and picked up even further around page 100. I deeply loved the “unlikeable” nature of Alex and her passionate, avenging angel ways! Her fighting everyone all the time is both so frustrating and so real. She is tough because she has to be and watching her learn to be vulnerable and being terrified to show her underbelly was a fabulous story! Jeremiah Post is a one hundred percent certified cinnadom. He holds firm boundaries with Alex that made me respect and like him even more. He is well aware of his status as a wealthy, cishet, white man and tries to use that privilege for good - by listening and trying to support the stories of those that wouldn’t otherwise be written. The supporting cast is brilliant - from the matriarch Loretta, to the parents and their own sets of issues and deep love, to the scene stealing primo Joe and the sister who I hope to see more of.

One more thing - The history and background of this story is deeply fascinating and never talked about and I honestly went on a deep dive to learn more about the traqueros and their lives in “boxcar barrios.”

This book started off with a bang.

Literally. *wink wink*

From the first chapter where Alex, our feisty, firecracker of a heroine meets Jeremiah, our big yet adorable bespectacled hero, I already knew that I was going to love this book. Thank heavens this delivered until the very end.

This book has a couple who couldn't be more different but has THE MOST explosive chemistry. Every banter, heated eye contact, and the smallest of skin touching exuded so much tension that made me want to root for their relationship more and more. Not to mention that Jeremiah was so gone for Alex even when she was showing resistance. I love watching a persistent hero slowly crumble a heroine's walls.

And the steam??? I have no words besides I just wanted to melt to the floor and stay as a puddle for as long as possible.

In all seriousness, I love it when a steamy scene clearly isn't just there for the sake of steam (although to be honest that isn't bad at all...but I digress). The steam here (at least the latter ones)  is clearly laced with intimacy that I physically felt my heart warm up reading them.

I also appreciated that this story showcased the colorful history and culture of Mexicans in the US. The strong family ties in this book was such an emotional roller coaster to read. Plus the whole plot surrounding the history of their bar added a new layer of mystery (and even eeriness) that was mostly interesting to read.

Overall, I highly recommend this book. This is perfect for those who are in the mood for a sweet and sexy romance with a little something more.

A solid 4/5 for this one with the urge to pick up more of this author's works!

Many thanks to NetGalley for graciously providing this ARC! All comments and opinions are my own.
