A very nice collaboration between Lester and Pinkney. This biography highlights the affinity of a black cowboy, Bob Lemmons, with the Mustangs he hunts. Appropriate for elementary.

A shrewd cowboy tracks a herd of wild mustangs and eventually challenges their leader. Once in charge, he leads the herd to the corral without ropes.
I'm not a horse person so I found this story kinda slow. The artwork is lovely though.

A great story, and beautiful illustrations, occasionally let down by stilted prose.

Nice to see some representation of African Americans in the Old West, especially in a children's picture book, but I felt the story would have been more interesting if it had shown more of Bob Lemmons' life beyond just this brief snapshot of him herding mustangs. I wanted to know more about how he'd become a brush cowboy. Also, the language of the author's descriptions, while lovely at times, might be confusing to a young audience. Still, definitely worth stocking in an elementary school library.
