This is definitely a character-based story with multiple POVs of their summer. It’s not a thriller; there just happens to be a dead body.

I enjoyed each character's unhinged mess and how they are terrible people.

I liked that we would get all sides of a story and see how the other characters interpreted an event—that was fun.

I liked the twist at the end—it was very clever. It was slow at parts, but I did enjoy this!

The title is not lying. These are bad people during the summer. Overall, I liked it fine. My rating may be more my fault than the book

I did listen to the audio book. I recommend reading vs. listening. I think that's where so of my problem comes from. I had a hard time keeping the characters straight. It was a lot of basic white names, so they blended together. The basic white names make sense as the story is about basic rich white people, so I'm not throwing any criticism at that. Just maybe physically reading rather than listening would have helped improve my rating.

The ending fell a little flat, but I loved the rest of the book.

I live in a community similar to the one the author parodies (substitute Tahoe for Salcombe), and yet sensitivity is not the reason for my one-star rating. The novel is full of caricatures that are so thinly developed, ridiculously unreal (unless we’re talking “reality TV”), and entirely unlikeable. Is there any character with redeeming qualities? Zero. Even that could be swept under the rug if the plot were engaging, but this story wasn’t even a fun summer read. Glad I sped it up so it didn’t waste too many hours of my life.
