A great beach read. The combination of setting and characters layers drama to a crescendo of wild proportions.
Eh,,,,,,, 2.5 stars probably.
When I picked this up at the library, I was looking for a no-brainer, fun, easily readable story about unlikable WASPs. Sometimes you just need a story about shallow rich people over the summer where the conclusion is that shallow rich people are terrible.
For those reasons I enjoyed this book for about 2/3 of it. None of the characters were super fleshed out but I honestly didn't care because I didn't need to feel super connected to them. I was just entertained by their cheating gossiping hateful antics.
The last 3rd kind of ruined it for me. We know in the first chapter there's a death, but as the book went on I'd honestly mostly forgotten about it and was okay with it. I felt like the author was trying to up the stakes with the death plot, but weirdly enough I felt LESS stakes with the dead body. The cheating I somewhat cared about. The did a rich person murder another rich person storyline I did not. I wasn't connected enough to any of the characters to mourn their passing or worry about whether they'd be connected to the death.
I also felt there were too many perspectives, to the point where it felt like the author ran out of content and started writing random POVs to bring the story to a respectable novel length. This probably contributed to the issue where I didn't feel super connected to any character.

Good enough to keep me listening. The characters were shallow, but that's the point. Nobody in this story was likeable.

The plot moved slowly, the characters are not compelling, and the end just kind of fizzled.
