Well, THAT was some coming of age story! You can definitely feel David Benioff's cinematic touch all over this, as well as sense the care with which he crafted this WWII setting. I'm not going to lie though, I was looking for the story and the writing to have more weight, considering the circumstances. There were parts of City of Thieves that gave me what I was looking for - dark, gripping scenes that felt real and honest, and that's where Benioff's writing was at its best. However, other parts of the book felt like the author really wanted to keep things light and cater to the YA audience. I also found the dialogue to have a very modern vibe/style to it, which seemed out of place. In the end, there were parts of the book I loved, and other parts that I thought were OK, but overall I definitely enjoyed the story, and would recommend the book to people who like historical fiction.

Lev and Kolya = new favorite bromance

But in seriousness, this can be a hard book to read at times, it’s vulgar and shows how cruel war is, but the light dialogue and preposterous “mission” they are sent on (to find a dozen eggs) balance it out. Highly enjoyable!

While the back cover made this book sound right up my alley, I did not enjoy it. The premise is good, but the characters were not particularly compelling and Benioff’s addition of crass humor was off-putting rather than funny. Yes, there are several episodes that were compelling, but that was more because of the horror of the situation and knowing that things like that truly happened than because of any attachment I had to the characters. Content considerations: frequent sexual and anatomical references; violence and gore; cannibalism; antisemitism. 18+
