As I read this book, I felt like I had read the whole thing before, even though I couldn't remember exactly what was going to happen. When I finished it, I felt stupid for not realizing how the sequence of events would go. Pretty standard and not that imaginative. I did laugh out loud at the last line though.
I didn’t want to like this book once I realized the author was one of the two guys who ruined the plot for Game of Thrones final season.
But it’s a solid story about war and the torturous things people have to do to survive war. Well done.
It’s haunting and painful and based around the truth of the siege of Leningrad.
The characters are solid and innovative. The first person narration feels truly like an autobiography.

3.5,
I feel a little bit bad for being so down on DB when I realized who he was, but whatever. It's a good book, he has a talent for writing.
Had a lot of themes for something that's not gonna be used on an 8th grade book report!

Really not sure if I’ve ever read anything better.
NOW, I realize I am usually a victim of recency bias, but this was incredible. In the 4.5-4.8 range for me right now. Hesitant to give out that 5th star bc I’m lame and like to think the perfect book exists ( see: 14 year old me reading Looking For Alaska)
I’d put this up against anything I’ve read in the last two years and I’d put Kolya up there with any character.
Edit: it was all a lie; rip

This was a good read. Kept me engaged and I mostly enjoyed the main characters. It probably won't leave a lasting impact, so I couldn't get all the way to a 5 star rating.
Read the book on Jim's recommendation. 3.5 stars. Book was very dark and the dreariness was a slog, but the characters made the bleakness a worthwhile journey.
