I have mixed feelings about this one. I really liked it, and it was a very dark read, but the ending really bugged me (mostly because you could see it coming from a mile off). When it's so obvious the author is going to kill a character you have been forced to care about, it kind of cheapens the event.

An incredible novel that documents the story of two Russian men who, while trying to survive the German seige and invasion of the Soviet Union in WW2, are arrested and set for execution. They are given the opportunity to live, however, if they can find one dozen eggs within a week and so the adventure begins. This story outlines unspeakable tragedies that befell the Soviet citizens, not only through the horrors of the Einzatzgruppen who murdered millions of Jews and suspected Bolsheviks, but the stubborn and manipulative Soviet propaganda machine that held its own citizens as hostages, preventing them from surrendering to the Germans. The brief relationship between Lev and Kolya is told with humour and bittersweet sadness. Highly recommended!
