I couldn’t put this down once I started it - the pacing and plot are perfect. Fair warning, though, there are some very dark moments depicting deprivation and war.
An adventure.. Absolutely. I don't think I've ever read anything about WWII from the perspective of Russian civilians/soldiers. This story was incredibly eye opening to the struggles Russia felt during the war. It was eye opening, but at the same time not overly historical- there was more about humanity and these two young men growing up against impossible odds than history or politics. Good read. I couldn't help but finish it quickly.
Great book! stomach churning in parts, but very well written.
I loved this historical fiction about the siege of Leningrad,it was recommended to me as a modern classic and I think the label works. A caution to some of my friends, this book uses harsh profanity repeatedly.
fast-paced story with an amazing balance between humor and tragedy.

One of the best books I've read in awhile. Character development was amazing and the dialogue read like a play. I loved it.
Interesting story and well-written. But ... Is anyone else tired of coming-of-age stories where the women in the book serve only as the fuel for sex fantasies of the horny male characters? It seems, from the general reviews of this book, I might be alone on this one.
Great war story, thrilling and a page turner. Both the quest for the rare items and the love story are wildly improbable, but who doesn't love it when the impossible happens to good people? (This is not a spoiler, since you know from the beginning that Lev survives.) I agree with Megan that it reads like a screenplay, in that it's all action and little description, but it didn't mar my appreciation. The author doesn't sugar coat the war, the starvation, the cruelty, the meaningless deaths, but it's the relationships between the protagonists that shines.
