"[Starving out the rats] was Solovet's way to show them that whenever they attack us, there will be consequences."

"But that means the pups are starving to death, too. Not just the big rats," Gregor said. "Doesn't that bother you?"

can you bear with me a moment as i say, once again, that suzanne collins had her finger on the PULSE? when i was a kid (reading this particular book in the series in one fevered night after school), i was hypnotized by the characters and the promise of the world, but i don't think i recognized the degree to which this series is staggeringly and explicitly anti-war. this woman has never pulled a punch in her LIFE. no, look, LISTEN to me. other kids' fantasy books are like "it's bad to be violent even if people are mean to you first :) forgive your enemies :) even if this story has nuance there is still a clearly designed antagonist because this is how children's stories work :)" and meanwhile the underland chronicles are out here like (serious act three spoilers for the twist of this book)
Spoiler"the people you think are the good guys accidentally set off a plague in their lab because they were trying to create bioweapons to leverage against the so-called bad guys as collective lethal punishment. and then they lied about having the cure. the lead scientist, as she's dragged out of the room after they unveil her, literally says the words 'i was just following orders.'"
. i know we all know the hunger games did all that but can we talk about how she never ever missed. also the protag is still twelve. these books are insane. 10/10

There's something really good about a lot of the points and moral lessons the story talks about without really forcing the point and I appreciate it.
Gregor dealing with the fact that if people weren't so driven to fight over nothing, would there be a reason to fight at all?
Did any of them make the right call by deciding to fight?
And the ongoing battle with that emotionally that he's dealing with at just 11 that's pretty intense.

It's very much unsurprising to me that this is the same person who wrote the Hunger Games, and to me this is just very much the same vein as the Animorphs of what does the constant war and fear do to you, and is what you're fighting for really the right answer? And on the moral front, where are the shades of grey and how do you know you're making the right calls?

This one was about the plague, and where it comes from and how to treat it, and I enjoyed re-reading it for sure just like I'm looking forward to the next book. My heart hurts for Gregor having to take care of so much and handle so many burdens but it's done really realistically and that's powerful.

This was my favorite book of the series and only took me a day to finish. IT WAS AMAZING. It took me through a rollercoaster of emotions and revealed so many secrets and hidden feelings from the characters it was almost to much. I definitely give it five stars.

I loved it! The ending was interesting and I am a bit scared to read the next book in the series, but I also look forward to it.

Again, dear god does Gregor go through it in this one. The middle was honestly quite harrowing to hear about Gregor's terrible journey through the jungle, and these books get darker and darker as the series progresses huh. Still, the returning characters of Gregor, Boots, Ripred and Luxxa shine and some interesting concepts of peace and war, and the politics of the Underland are explored here.

Maybe if everyone read this, we would’ve already achieved world peace /hj

The way the Underworld builds and builds and builds upon itself from the first book to the third is incredible. Excited for the final two

I had totally forgotten what happened in this book but it was definitely action packed!! I quite thoroughly enjoyed it, just as before! Luxa and Gregor’s bond is really adorable, especially the ending part
