I started this having absolutely no expectations but it was so, so good. I finished the first volume so quickly, I couldn't bring myself to stop.
The characters and the setting are well done, I found myself getting attached to these characters too quickly.
Looking forward to reading the next volume!

When I read the synopsis of this manga, I admit that I wasn't very attracted to it because I have never been a fan of samurais (not even Rurouni Kenshin), but I still decided to give it a try, and it turns out that I'm loving it! Although the story of the Kumo brothers seems like one more shonen at first, I realized immediately that this is not the case.

Love the art and shading. The character designs are very appealing too. The main story is fairly short in this volume but it leaves a good impression with action scenes aplenty and endearing characters. The second story was a little fast-paced but was a good addition to the setting of the main arc. I think I'm going to enjoy this series!

During the Meiji era, the three brothers of the Kumo family have found work helping recapture escaped criminals. These criminals are then taken to an inescapable prison: Gokumonjo, a fortress built inside of a giant tree in the middle of a large lake. The eldest son is very strong, and the two younger ones train hard to make him proud. Soramaru, the middle son, wants to prove to his brother that he is strong enough to handle jobs, but he gets into a bit of trouble going after a former samurai who is now a criminal. The second half of the book contains the side story “Fleeting Laugher,” which takes place 600 years before. One of the Kumo’s ancestors is present. The story follows Hirari of the Abe clan, who is trying to win the heart of Botan, a shikigami who has been summoned to help seal away the powerful demon dragon, Orochi. Hirari doesn’t want take up the family charge and fight Orochi, but he finds himself in the middle of the fight between Orochi and humanity anyway.

I was not expecting the last few chapters to deviate from the original storyline! It was a wonderful addition I don’t remember seeing in the anime! I’m glad I got a little more backstory with those characters.

I absolutely love the Kumo brothers and their relationships with each other - with Shirasu as well (my heart still aches though)! I like how the setting focuses more on a traditionally-based Japan but adds a darker magical element I think is also based on Japanese culture.

On a slightly fangirlish note, I wasn’t prepared for the Kumo brothers to be more attractive in the manga than the anime…especially Sora! I wish I had more volumes of this manga!

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I was honestly a little confused with this volume. The first half shows the current plot that revolves around 3 brothers who are responsible for sending criminals to prison. The second half is part love story and also sets up the idea of Orochi using humans as vessels and takes place in the past. The switch from current to past was a bit sudden, so that threw me off a little, but I was able to follow along okay after that.

The story itself has an interesting concept! The characters also have a lot of potential. I'm looking forward to seeing where this story goes from here!

Re-read in English in the hopes that the easier reading experience would make me like this more, but nope it was still on the level of pretty okay, nothing great.
I do like the art though. BUT, Tokyopop's decision to translate the kanji 曇 on the backs of their clothes as a butt ugly KUMO annoyed me to no end. I almost wanted to drop a star just for that atrocity, but it is not the fault of the original manga so three stars it is.
