The 5 star is because I really can't fault it for what it is. Obviously it's tiny and I want now, but it's meant to be small and approachable, so I'm done with that. Knowing that, I think it was a good mix of some personal info and presenting what should be basic information in a digestible way. It didn't read like a reference book which is really what it is because Vaid-Menon has such a strong, beautiful voice. I also really appreciated the metaphors and other ways of explaining concepts that were fresh and clear while also not being offensive for people who would most need to read this book. Not that they will but hey some might!

Lovely book & great guide! I know I’m biased probably as a queer person and WGS student but I say 4 stars because this is very much an intro. I would have loved a small list of resources for further learning or even maybe referencing where n how these dimensions of power named in the book came about for Alok. It reminded me of some of what’s spoken about in Suarez’s The Power Manual. Again this is an intro and does that — I just hope folks take it upon themselves to dig further / deeper!

A great, short, helpful, accessible, and informative read. I read the ebook along with the audiobook, which was read by the author.

If you're well versed in the queer space then this book likely won't offer you any new or paradigm shifting information, but it does contain some useful talking points that I imagine could be great for someone looking to have tough conversations with others. I would also reccomend this book for anyone newer to the queer & trans space as a great way to learn.

Wow. Wow wow wow. This was a short read yes, but it's an insightful and impactful commentary on the harm gender binary brings to people and society.

The first few parts spoke about the author's personal journey and queer people in America. But as the book delved into faulty arguments and instances and the existence of queer people in other communities, the more I got angry and upset. Angry and upset because I see that as well in my own country, in the LGBTQ+ people here. This made me think so much about our own problems here, and how I still hope for the better. How we can move beyond the gender binary.

I think I won't forget about this book quite easily.

Alok Vaid-Menon is a global treasure and I want them to write more books please.

This is my second time reading “Beyond the Gender Binary” and I plan to read it twice a year moving forward because it’s important and very accessible. It is making me a better ally and activist.
