Great concept - he could've done it with just bears or mountain lion and anyone would've liked it. But the format was really effective, and the true stories of animal attacks mixed in were really effective. So good. And the audiobook cast is nuts.

Sometimes you read a book at a specific time in your life and it becomes part of your soul. Every book Max Brooks has written has managed to be one of those books for me. I'm bad at writing reviews for art I actually like, I might come back to this one someday to flesh it out.

Full disclosure: I didn’t really care about anything outside of the journal entries and skimmed a lot. When the book cut away to some of the side interviews,  I felt like I was taking a nap. That said, once the action in the journal picked up, I was hooked. I have to say, it’s a little impressive that anyone can even think to keep a diary in all of this, lol. I stopped writing in mine after a week and the worst thing I can blame it on is ‘the heat.’

I enjoyed the story once the chaos began and it was the part I savored. The action, the ‘battles,’ - those were so fun. But the rest felt like a drag, and we all know no one writes in a journal like they’re writing a book. Some pull this off better than others, but this one felt forced.
