The "new man" is one of the best characterizations I've seen and truly timeless. Also interesting to circle back to this book, as it's influence on at least Dostoevsky is front and center (I think Hem also admitted heavy inspiration, which makes sense though I'd have thought it was unlikely)

[1862] My Everyman's Library edition translates the title as Fathers and Children. (notes to self…) My first 5-star read of 2022! True, it’s about fathers and sons but it’s also about the women in their lives. Fully actualized women with thoughts and lives of their own at that. I love it when narrators insert themselves a little bit, as does our narrator here. I found this warmer than other Russian literature that I’ve read. Felt contemporary.

however passionate, sinning, and rebellious the heart hidden in the tomb, the flowers growing over it peep serenely at us…they tell us not of eternal peace alone, of that great peace of “indifferent” nature; they tell us too of eternal reconciliation and of life without end.”

“the period of time in which it is my lot to live is so petty beside the eternity in which i have not been, and shall not be…and in this atom, this mathematical point, the blood is circulating, the brain is working and wanting something…”

“god knows, what rot it is? every man hangs on a thread, the abyss may open under his feet any minute, and yet he must go and invent all sorts of discomforts for himself, and spoil his life.”

“dreams sometimes danced in rainbow colours before her eyes even, but she breathed more freely when they died away, and did not regret them.”
