I felt the story was slow and not interesting, and then I read some about the author being problematic.

While I don't tend to like an enemies-to-lovers romance, I rather enjoyed this one. While I did find their rivalry and arguments immature and annoying, their bickering was balanced with a lot of
gothic horror and eventually great banter.
This is such a good Halloweeny read with ghosts, romance and a spooky Scottish castle. Mix into that, two Native American authors being our main characters and I was sold on the premise of this book.
Overall, even if it's just for the spooky gothic vibes, I definitely recommend this book as a fun, not too serious romance.
Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin’s Press /St. Martin’s Griffin for the e-arc of this book!
Woof. I didn't know of the controversy before I started but it's glaring once you get going... It's a shame because the overall setting/concept is great. It absolutely should have been two stories.
I enjoyed the beginning of the book and the concept. The non-romance plot just wasn’t as thrilling or mysterious as I’d hoped. The last 25% I felt myself just becoming less and less interested

Are you a horror AND a romance girlie? Because I am and this book was a great spicy romance read with spooky elements to keep me entertained. I liked that the author also focused on native representation which I thought was a cool addition to the story. The plot itself was very cut and paste like a typical romance, but I’d say adding an old haunted mansion to it made it worth the read.

I liked this overall. I listened to it so I missed how they ended up in a writers retreat in Scotland and why (other than where else would you find a haunted castle? Haha). These are 2 indigenous horror writers, who don’t like each other (enemies to lovers). Who go to Scotland, stuck together in a haunted castle, who come to like each other. This was good, not great. The friends were also entertaining.
