Worth the hour it took to read it but not much more. I was genuinely surprised, saddened, grossed out, and giddy about sections or characters of the book. It's a light book with a simple message.
this graphic novel feels like it's more for the junior high audience, which is strange since it's about medical school and later life issues. also, the illustration is pretty simplistic with not a lot of text. it's a fairly interesting, yet bizarre story.
This book about the pulls of family, self-interest, and altruism in picking a life path was incredibly touching! I almost cried! Geez!
I seem to be reading lots of books about father-child relationships at the moment, which perhaps reflects the fact that I have a fraught relationship with my own father. At least I'm not alone in that. This was a quirky, moving and clever exploration of parental pressure and fulfilling the destiny that others have foisted on you. I had a similar experience: my obsession has always been books, I wanted to be a writer, I ended up at law school thanks to an overbearing father. I worked in politics for 3.5 years, quit and have gone back to uni to study to be a social worker. Destiny fulfilled, finally. As a child of the 80s, I love the cover art (good old Game Boy, you served me well) and references to Pacman, Super Mario Bros. I didn't envy Dennis his creepy Powerpuff Girls angels of destiny though. A beautiful ending, proving that you can turn your passion into something practical.
It's difficult to appreciate a coming-of-age tale when it isn't one that you can personally relate to. This story of Dennis' s struggle to reconcile his parents' expectations with his own ambitions fell a little short of the mark.
Anyone that grew up playing Nintendo will love this book! It has a great story line and the video game references make me laugh. It is extremely easy to read and would be great for teenagers.
A comic book about video games, med school, Asian-American parenting, and guilt.
Includes a good life lesson and humorous characters.
